Egg yolks can change colour depending on the type of feed that a hen is fed.

If a hen is fed more of a wheat-based diet, the yolk will tend to be a pale yellow and a corn-based diet will produce a deeper yellow yolk.  While yolk colour can range from pale yellow to deep orange it does not affect the flavor, nutrient value or quality of the egg.  

Regardless of the type of feed, farmers will work with nutritionists to ensure that the laying hens are getting the vitamins and nutrients they require for good health.
